My thesis research is coming to an end. Indeed, the research is over and the writing is mostly done; all that’s left is to review, revise, defend and publish. To add some imagery, I’ve made a video that reflect some of the issues raised in the thesis research.
Jane Jacobs. Yes, I know, urban planners tend to love associating themselves with her name and ideas. But, in the context of my thesis research, the TVO documentary offers the best kind of insight – perhaps both the planned urbanism and local community organizations misses some of the key underlying intentions? (In short, think: Towers in the Park & Backroom Negotiations). But I’ll elaborate more about this in my thesis…for now, enjoy the video:

I came across a busker Downtown Guelph today, singing a Dylan-style tune of opposition to corporate extraction of local water by Nestle. To me, it is part of the Guelph I’ve come to know; engaged, critical, aware and willing to voice their view.
Saturday October 23rd, 2010 University of Waterloo planning students met with planning students from Ryerson University to socialize and learn from Paul Bedford, Chief Planner Emeritus, City of Toronto, about planning in downtown Toronto. This is a rare glimpse of the good, the bad and the ugly of planning in Toronto.
